February 2018 marks 50 years of active preservation by Silver Stream Railway. Ka935 was the first locomotive purchased back in 1968 with it passing into the possession of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society on the 2nd of February that year.

Answers to common questions
Q. Does your train move. How often does it go?
A. Yes! The locomotive and train are fully restored and running vehicles. The train leaves once every 20-25 minutes with the return trip taking around 15-20 minutes and you can ride as many times as you like during the hire period.
Q. I have over 28 people. Is that ok?
A. The birthday hire covers 28 people which is the maximum number that can be accommodated in the carriage at any one time. Extras may be paid for at the standard ticket prices and be substituted on and off the carriage.
Q. Can we come early to set up?
A. No. The booking starts at the time selected, although you do have 2hour 15min, so the extra time can be used to set up.
Q. Do you require a deposit? When do I pay?
A. No. Just pay in the station building on the day.
Q. Where do we light the candles on the birthday cake?
A. We do not allow naked flames in the carriage. Candles may be lit on the platform or under the station canopy.
Q. Is the carriage available on days other than the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month?
A. No, however we do offer charters outside this time, please check our Charters page for more information
