We are open to the public most Sundays of the year with a steam locomotive in service, supplemented by diesel locomotive or railcar.
On the first Sunday of the month, one of our large steam locomotives is used. Each locomotive in the fleet has its turn at hauling the once familiar red wooden carriages..
You are welcome to stay as long as you like and have as many rides as you like. Your ticket is valid all day..
Our railway is sited on a portion of the original 1875 railway alignment, which was bypassed in 1954 when the railway was routed over the existing Silverstream Bridge. Two totara piles from the old bridge now stand at our gateway..
Most of our collection has connections to the Wellington area. By arrangement, visitors may visit the engine shed between train trips. This building houses our locomotives, railcar, workshop and members' facilities. Inquire of the Stationmaster or Guard. Also worth a visit is our small museum of railway memorabilia. Housed in what used to be the Haywards Station building, this houses a number of items of interest, including one of the most extensive collections of unusual railway tickets to be found anywhere in New Zealand.
Being Safe during your visit with us
- Stand and watch trains but stay clear of the tracks.
- When at the station and waiting for the train, always stand at least 1 metre back from the edge and do not run on the platform.
- Trains are very quiet, you can see them long before you can hear them.
- Please respect and obey all train staff commands - we are here to ensure your safety
- Don't attempt to board or exit the train once the doors are closed and the guard has blown his whistle. Doing so could cause serious injury or worse
