Current Restoration projects at SSR and engine specifications/status

This small saddle tank engine, built by Dubs and co of Glasgow in 1875, served in many parts of the country. It is one of two preserved and the only one in operating condition.

Built by NZR at its Hillside Workshops in 1930 this engine spent most of its life on shunting duties at Christchurch before being withdrawn in 1968. It was restored with the aid of a Lotteries commission grant and first steamed on the Silver Stream Railway in July 1998.
D137 was built by Scott Brothers Ltd of Christchurch in 1877.
D143 was built by Neilson & Co., Glasgow in 1874
Imported by NZR from English Electric. These were 2 of 15 of the first diesel electric locomotives in New Zealand.

This was the first electric engine to be run in Wellington. The only engine of the original electric engines to be built by English Electric. The remaining nine were assembled by NZR.

This engine, built at NZR's Hutt workshops in 1941, spent most of its working life on the lower section of the Main Trunk line. It was withdrawn from service in 1967.  This is one of only 3 KA's left in New Zealand and was the main reason SSR was formed. of the 6 KB's made in the Hillside workshop in Dunedin only 1 remains to day in Christchurch.

Built in 1877 by Avonside Engine Co of Bristol, England, this small tank engine worked on railway construction in many areas of the North Island before being sold for industrial use.

Standard Railcars. Built by NZR in 1938. There were 6 in this class. These were with-drawn from service by 1972.

This engine was built in the NZR Workshops at Hillside, Dunedin, in 1914 and worked Wellington suburban trains for many years until 1955. Thereafter it worked on the South Island West Coast until being withdrawn in 1969.
